World Centre of Pušipel in Štrigova
Štrigova – known both as the home of wine and of Saint Jerome – has long been a symbol of rich cultural heritage and tradition. Following the popular lookout point on Mađerkin breg, the town now proudly boasts another landmark: the World Centre of Pušipel. This ambitious project is rooted in the work of local winemakers and vineyard owners united under the association Hortus Croatiae.
At the opening ceremony, Matija Posavec, Prefect of Međimurje County, emphasized that the launch of the World Centre of Pušipel represents not only a symbolic “window to the world,” but also the culmination of years of effort, passion, and dedication. He noted that Međimurje, its vineyards, and its winemakers have made remarkable progress in a relatively short period of time, paving the way for the establishment of such an important institution. “Pušipel makes us unique, and that is exactly what we must highlight,” Posavec stated.
This year, Međimurje’s winemakers brought home an impressive 29 medals from the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards – 23 bronze and 6 silver – making the Međimurje Wine Road the most awarded wine route in the world when measured by both the number of accolades and the size of its vineyards.
The new centre not only celebrates Pušipel – the region’s signature white wine variety – but also serves as a cultural and tourist hub, strengthening Međimurje’s position on the global wine map and inviting visitors to discover the unique flavors and stories of this beautiful corner of Croatia.
