3 Reasons Why You Should Visit the North-East of Croatia

We can imagine the north-eastern part of Croatia as a perfect plain landscape interwoven with the lines of several important rivers and only a few hills.

This place is visited by people looking for proper rest and awakening in the scents of fresh air and nature, interested in culture, good local food, and excellent wine. Recently, this area has been ideal for adventurers and tourists looking for action and adrenaline. Let's not forget that it is also suitable for young people - there is no lack of entertainment at manifestations!

Nature

We believe that untouched nature is precisely one of the main assets of these regions. It is hard to imagine how this vast plain was once part of the Pannonian Sea, but it was. Unreal views of fields, meadows, forests, and rivers are only occasionally interrupted by mountain ridges that add extra charm to these parts. One of the more famous mountain lodges, Jankovac, is located right on the slope of the Papuk mountain and is an unavoidable location when visiting Slavonia. Kopački rit is another picturesque location in this region. Located in Baranja, it is home to many animals and plants that enjoy the untouched nature that leaves no one immune. If you usually enjoy magnificent oak forests and the murmur of the river, Otočki virovi is a location made for you. This picnic area is recommended because it offers a place for lunch and sleeping in addition to an educational walk through the Spačva forest, a boat ride, and bicycle routes.

Culture

History and culture lovers will have plenty to do in beautiful Slavonia and Baranja. Numerous castles, forts, museums, and other sights keep their doors open for curious tourists. Eltz Castle is the city museum of Vukovar, as is Odescalchi Castle in Ilok. When visiting castles, do not miss seeing The Pejačević Family Castle in Virovitica. The baroque fortress on the Sava River in Slavonski Brod is also fascinating, as is the Osijek Fortress, which is the perfect backdrop for a leisurely walk and sightseeing of the city. If you find yourself in Vukovar, known as "Heroic City," climb the impressive water tower, symbolizing the city's courage.

Manifestations

Slavonija and Baranja also offer numerous events showing the most beautiful traditions preserved throughout history. Vinkovci autumn festival is the manifestation of town on Bosut, which is accompanied by the arrival of many guests and tourists every year. The Golden Strings of Slavonia from Požega brings only the best traditional tambourine sounds. Embroideries of Đakovo show the most beautiful traditional costumes, so we are sure there will be no shortage of beautiful shots.

In addition to these well-known manifestations, it is important to note that other smaller places also hold their local fests once a year. Known as "kirvaj", celebrations occur on the day of the place's patron saint when the whole family gathers, and young people enjoy entertainment at concerts and parties.
