Getting to Know Osijek and Its Charms

We'll get back later to this amazing accommodation. Let us first tell you a bit more about Osijek. The city has a lot to offer, so even the pickiest travelers will have a great stay.    

Osijek will draw you in with its many legends and beautiful sights to explore, and the stories it has to tell are far too long to fit into this article. So we will only share a few of them; the rest is up to you to find. 

Walking through Osijek's city center, you will notice various architectural styles. Europska Avenija is a prime example of the art nouveau style, with magnificent villas from the early 20th century that will make you feel like you've stepped into a time machine. Let's also remember other gems, such as the Urania cinema, the Knopp house, and the main post office building. 

You might hear some bells ringing during your walk around 11 in the morning. This means it's Knedl hour! It is a unique tradition celebrating the liberation of Osijek from the Ottoman Empire (September 29th, 1687, at 11 am). To honor that day, churches started ringing every Friday at 11 am. During the 1920s, housewives called that ringing the "Mehlspeisen Glock" (time to boil pasta) so the lunch would be ready at noon! This expression changed to "Knedl clock", after the favorite dough dish. The tradition still lives to this day, so don't miss the "Knedl clock" in Osijek and have some knedlas! Knedla is a cooked potato dough made in a ball filled with plums and/or plum jam and sprinkled with breadcrumbs. They are so delicious that you will wish that every hour is Knedl hour!

After enjoying some delicious knedlas, it's time to continue your tour and burn those calories! There aren't many cities better suited for that than Osijek due to its large number of parks and a long promenade alongside the river Drava. You might also opt for a bike since Osijek is dubbed Croatia's Amsterdam because of its many biking paths. But, no matter the transportation, walking through the greenery of Osijek will make you feel refreshed. 

While exploring the city, especially the historical fortress of Tvrđa, use caution as there is a legend of missing treasure! During Napoleon's time, the treasury of the Habsburg Empire was transferred to the walls of the Osijek fortress to protect it. When the danger passed, the treasury was returned, but one chest disappeared forever. Who knows, maybe you could find some clues to its whereabouts?

Or maybe it was already taken by another Osijek legend: Čaruga. He was also known as Slavonian Robin Hood, as he only stole from wealthy citizens. For some, he was a simple bandit, while others consider him a hero.

If you follow the treasure trail, your path might take you outside Osijek into the Baranja region. However, you might not find the treasure measured in gold, but rather the one measured in experiencing the beautiful nature of Kopački Rit, a nature park also known as the Amazon of Europe, and many vineyards and wineries.
