Explore Nature Park Papuk – A Hidden Treasure of Slavonia Region

Tired of busy city life? A trip to nature may be the adventure that you need. You don't have to climb the highest peaks. Or do something extreme. You can simply enjoy the panoramic views over the endless forest hills, reset your mind, relax, and heal. In Croatia, Papuk is known to be a mountainous paradise in the so-called ''flat'' Slavonia region. With its numerous biological, historical, cultural, and geological characteristics, Papuk Nature Park is a perfect mix of adventure, adrenaline, relaxation, and exploration.

Papuk – The Highest Mountain in Slavonia Region

Although this mountain looks like a giant, you will undoubtedly be surprised by its height - only 953 meters. The main reason for this is its surroundings; the golden plains of the Slavonia region, from which Papuk rises like the brightest pearl. Which, on the one hand,  actually is. Namely, Papuk mountain was an island in the Pannonian Sea about ten million years ago. Yep, Croatia had another sea in the east! This fact is supported by many fossils remains from that era. That's why this nature park received the status of a UNESCO geopark.

It covers over 336 km2 area. You can't access every square inch, of course. But whatever you can do will blow your mind. With many trails, which take you to an entirely new world with every step you take, tell a story and clearly show one thing – the splendor and richness of Papuk's nature. On almost every corner, you come across a stream or waterfall. Extraordinary biodiversity. And impressive caves. The Lord of the Rings fans will compare it with Rivendell – one of the most unique locations in the fantasy genre. And we definitely see the connection. You can explore Nature Park on foot, by bicycle or on a boat, it depends on the season. But to help you a bit, we've rounded up the top 4 things to see and do on Papuk – Slavonia's highest mountain.

Connect with the Nature

An essential part of visiting this Nature Park is the Jankovac Forest Park. Located in the heart of Papuk, at 475 meters above sea level, this forest is rich in numerous waterfalls, centuries-old trees, and a fairy-tale lake. Take a walk along the wooden paths and enjoy the pristine oasis of nature. In the summer months, we recommend renting a bicycle or a canoe. Finally, don't forget to immortalize your stay with a photo in front of the magnificent 35-meter-high Skakavac waterfall - a favorite among tourists. The waterfall looks magical even in winter, like an ice sculpture.

Go back 10 million years in the House of the Pannonian Sea

Although today it seems completely unimaginable, 10 million years ago. Papuk was an island in the Pannonian Sea in which the 20-meter megalodon shark, Miocene whales, and dolphins swam, and rhinos walked on its land. We recommend visiting the interactive House of the Pannonian Sea, where you will discover all the spiciness that this mountain hides.

Rupnica

We could describe Rupnica as nature's attempt at modern art. This geological site is a true monument of a turbulent magmatic past. Unique volcanic rocks in the form of quadrangles and hexagons leave no one indifferent.

Sleep under the Stars

If you want to explore every corner of this park, it will take you more than 24 hours. So sleep under the stars at the Duboka campsite, and discover all the charms of Papuk Nature Park. From beautiful nature and traditional cuisine to adrenaline park and zipline, do we need to say more?

Surrender to the nature of Papuk, recharge your batteries, and discover the charms of Slavonia. You can get all the additional information on their website. Have a great trip!
