Can you tell us more about your background and how your family's winemaking legacy influenced your decision to enter the world of wine?

I was born in Bjelovar, Croatia, where my parents, a journalist, and a council worker, ignited my passion for winemaking. Despite the region's focus on wheat and corn, my parents planted blackberries on my grandfather's land, where they started making wine in our garage in the 80s. Inspired by their talent and dedication, I pursued a master's degree in winemaking from Agriculture University in Zagreb. To further expand my expertise, I obtained a Graduate Diploma in Oenology from EIT in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Their legacy continues to drive my pursuit of this wonderful path.

What inspired you to leave Croatia and pursue winemaking in New Zealand specifically?

In 2012, frustrated by corruption and cronyism in Croatia, I traveled to New Zealand, unaware at that time of the extent of its wine industry or the historical influence of Dalmatian immigrants, such as the Babich and Yukich wine families. As I learned more, I shelved plans to stay working and living in New Zealand and decided my wine story would be that of a new generation of Croatian winemakers in New Zealand. However, that ends up on my journey. Plus, I absolutely fell in love with New Zealand and New Zealand wines, people, and places.

After working for other wineries, what made you decide to start your own brand, "Eva Pemper" wines, and what does it mean to continue your family's legacy on the other side of the world?

During my 7-year wine industry career, I built valuable connections. After working in Marlborough, I collaborated with a grower I met there and did a vintage in France. Combining these experiences, I launched Eva Pemper Wines in October 2019, focusing on Sauvignon Blanc from the Wither Hills.

Leaving my stable winemaking job was risky, but it allowed me to create an authentic wine that reflects my identity and family legacy from Croatia. The label features my name, photo, and a cupid, a nod to my parents' brand and my passion.

Despite COVID-19 hitting just two months after my launch and disrupting global expansion plans, I shifted focus to domestic sales, targeting restaurants, wine shops, wine bars, and online sales. With the help of my connections, I expanded to the USA (East Coast), China, South Korea, Australia, and Germany.

What is the core concept or story behind the "Eva Pemper" brand, and how does it reflect your Croatian heritage and the influence of Croatian winemakers in New Zealand?

The "Eva Pemper" brand embodies my family's legacy, influenced by New Zealand's rich Croatian heritage in the wine industry. We're inspired by the Croatian families who immigrated here over a century ago and contributed to the global success of New Zealand's wine industry. As a new-generation Croatian winemaker, I'm proud to continue this legacy and inspire others in the wine industry. The Little Cupid holding a glass of wine is a legacy from my family's wine label and represents our love and passion for life, passed down through generations.

What is your winemaking philosophy, and how do you strive to showcase the grapes and vineyards through your wines while maintaining a simple and approachable style?

As a winemaker, my vision is to allow the grapes and the vineyards to speak for themselves through the wine and to intervene as little as possible while crafting a delicious drop that represents a certain place in time. My winemaking style is very simple, and I try to make approachable wines that are easy to drink and can be enjoyed on any occasion while at the same time, they are delicious, fresh, and elegant.

Can you describe the current portfolio of "Eva Pemper" wines and their characteristics? Are there any future plans to expand the range?

"Eva Pemper" brand's portfolio at the moment consists of mostly single vineyard Marlborough wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. My dream is also to showcase the best of each wine region in New Zealand. This could include wines like Central Otago Pinot Noir or Hawke's Bay Syrah.

I am particularly passionate and intrigued by the world of sparkling wine. I am hoping to one day introduce a beautiful bubbly into the "Eva Pemper" brand as well. That is another dream of mine.

You mentioned your passion for sparkling wine. How do you envision incorporating it into the "Eva Pemper" brand, and what kind of sparkling wine do you hope to produce?

I think my brand would perfectly suit a sparkling wine, wine to celebrate all the beautiful moments in life, I am all about that. I would really love to make a couple of different sparkling wines: a Rose sparkling and blanc de blanc and Méthode Marlborough, the traditional method.

It's impressive that your "Eva Pemper Sauvignon Blanc 2022" received a high rating from Cameron Douglas, a renowned Master Sommelier. How did it feel to receive such recognition, and what does it mean for the future of your brand?

It is absolutely fantastic to get this kind of recognition and reward for a very special wine coming from the new vineyard. I have harvested these grapes for the first time ever. This same wine, just a couple of weeks ago, won a gold medal at the Sommeliers Choice Awards competition in the US. I am over the moon and so super excited to be able to share that with everyone. It is a crazy rollercoaster of emotions and feelings, and I can't thank enough everyone who supported me and continued to support me on this journey. I am so happy and proud, which makes me even more motivated and inspired to keep going.

In your own words, how would you describe the unique qualities and flavors of your Marlborough wines, such as the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay?

My wines are a true representation of the purity of New Zealand soil air and the uniqueness of the climate and the terroir altogether. They are fresh, fruity, and light and, as I say, "New Zealand in the glass. " I aim to capture that purity in my wines and for everyone to feel that while enjoying a drink.

What are your aspirations for the future of the "Eva Pemper" brand, both in terms of expanding your reach and inspiring young people in the wine industry?

My biggest dream is to have my Eva Pemper wines in Croatian restaurants, wine bars, shops, and a cellar door at my family's winery. I also want to expand internationally. I'm passionate about supporting local businesses in both New Zealand and Croatia and inspiring young people to do the same. Sustainability is a key goal for me, aiming to produce wines from eco-friendly vineyards that conserve water, energy, and ecosystems.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring winemakers who are looking to follow their dreams and make their mark in the wine industry?

My advice would be to be very open-minded and patient and use all the opportunities that come their way to make the dream a reality but also to have fun along the way and enjoy every moment. Only the sky is the limit.
