Trakošćan Throughout History

Although the construction of this castle began during the 13th century, it will take several more centuries for its final appearance. As a result, the families that owned this castle changed, and, interestingly, it is unknown who were castle's first owners. Thanks to several legends, we can only guess and imagine what the first court days were like in this area. The Celjski, Korvin, and Drašković families are some of the important owners claiming the court, and today the site is owned by the state.

During the 18th century, the ruling Drašković family abandoned the castle, and the space began to deteriorate due to neglect. During the 19th century, following new acquisitions and the motive of returning to tradition, the castle was renovated and regained its lost splendor. The Drašković family lived in the castle for some time and later moved to Austria. After their departure in the middle of the 20th century. Later, a museum was established in it with a permanent exhibition whose beauty we can enjoy today.

A Unique Visit to the Castle

The interiors and exteriors of the castle are attractive for adults and children - both will enjoy the tour equally. The museum's permanent exhibition is divided into a low and a high ground floor and the first and second floors. A walk through the palace kitchen, hunting and knight's hall, dormitories, library, and guest rooms will awaken a true history lover in you. There are stunning portraits of the Drašković family in the castle, so it is interesting to trace the genealogy of this famous Croatian family.

The Museum Is Surrounded by Impressive Nature

We must not forget that a visit to Trakošćan does not only include the castle's interior. The exterior content is very representative. Surrounded by a park, a meadow, and a lake, you will enjoy the atmosphere this environment brings. You can enjoy the view of nature by walking along an educational path with the interesting name "Fairy Road".

Visit Trakošćan Castle; we guarantee you will feel like you are in the most beautiful fairy tale!
