The Fight for the Survival of Young Bears

The sanctuary for young bears in Kuterevo is a place where young bears who have been orphaned or lost their mothers in hunting find a way to readjust to the wild. Every year, locals and volunteers from around the world provide support and care for these young wild animals. Their mission is not only to protect bears but also to educate the public about the importance of preserving wild species and their natural habitat. The program in Kuterevo includes educating visitors and connecting them with the wilderness and the charisma of bears. In 2005, the Volunteer Station was established to support the project and encourage the development of the local community. In recent years, the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary has hosted an average of 15 volunteer groups, more than 50 individual volunteers, and over 20,000 visitors. Visitors can visit the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary during spring, summer, and autumn. Since bears are in hibernation during the winter, visits are avoided to avoid disturbing the animals unless absolutely necessary. During spring and autumn, visitors should report to the Volunteer Station upon arrival, where they will be greeted by long-term volunteers, provided with instructions and information, and guided through the sanctuary. In the summer months, local guides will take on the role of welcoming and informing visitors. It is recommended to visit the sanctuary early in the morning or late afternoon, especially during summer days.
